Nkuku was founded on the back of a life-changing adventure. We (Ali and Alex Cooke) set off on a year-long round the world trip. From the outset we were inspired and humbled by the talented craftspeople and their beautiful work, that we met on the journey.
It then encouraged us to do something different, so on our return, we moved out of London to rural Devon and started working with artisans throughout the world, supporting and celebrating their skills by bringing their products to a wider audience.
We borrowed the name Nkuku (‘Nu-kuh -kuh’), from a village in Zambia, and wrote our business plan on the cover of a paperback. Our first product was for the stylish journals that we still sell today.
That was back in 2003, today our team and products may have grown, but we still have the same values and hands-on approach, meeting and working with all our makers personally. That’s how we know that every product has a story to tell….
